Bottle

James Zoller

[The first brilliant rays of morning sun
catch a newly emptied wine bottle
splashing its colors on the walls.]

I have begun
the sober period
of my life.

One might think it
a kind of emptiness
a loss of particular joy.

Or, one might notice
how light catches skin
how light shatters

on the old air within
how it throws itself
across the wall.

For a moment
my long elegance
is shadowed within

the dancing light.
For a moment
I am free

of shape
I am free
of weight

I am free
of bottleness, of glass,
for a moment

the shadows
hold no memor

of hands.
